Time to start another oil painting. The idea evolves with multiple quick sketches. Here is the first brain dump. The arrows on the woman are me wanting more twist in her torso. The circle with the question mark is the light source but I haven’t figured out what the source is yet. You can see the perspective and horizon line in the flooring. The beast she has on a leash and her costume is at this point undefined. All these issues will have to be worked out before I draw it at full size and transfer that sketch to the painting board.

I think I could get to like gouache. It dries very quickly but can be rewetted and moved around. It has a thickness that lends itself to blending. Here is the completed American Goldfinch. It is a little rough. If you look closely you can see that I need more work with gouache to get the feel of the paint and find its limits. Not bad for an hour’s work. Interestingly the branch is a straight mix of black and white. It looks a little green to me. I noticed in my last painting that the black oil paint is actually blue. Apparently black is not always black.
